Buying an RV trailer is sort of like buying a car, without the engine. You want to make sure that you get a good buy, but that you dont get a lemon either. There are some basic questions you should ask yourself before buying a used RV trailer. The first and biggest question you should ask yourself is what are you going to use your RV for?

 Camping.
 Long trips.
 Small weekend trips.
Long term occupancy. Are you going to live in the RV?
 Fishing and hunting only.
 Local use camping only.

There are a few of the things you might use your used RV trailer for. Each of them will require that youre RV is equipped with different things.

For instance, if you plan on going on long, extended trips in your RV trailer, you will want to make sure that you get a larger one that can accommodate all of your daily living needs. Does it have enough sleeping space, a toilet and a shower? How about closets for your clothes and storage for other things? These are things that will make your traveling more enjoyable. On a short weekend trip, you could get away with a little cramming, but over months this could cause some serious problems.

You will also want to consider the size and weight of the RV trailer. How much can your car or truck haul? You never want to overload your vehicles maximum towing capacity. Doing so can be very dangerous.

Here are a few more things you should consider.

How many people are you planning on having sleep in your trailer? This will help determine the size and bedding that you will need.

Are you mechanically inclined? You need to learn certain things in order to maintain an RV. Its not that difficult, but it still has to be done. If you arent very handy, you might want to consider getting a newer model of RV that is less likely to break down.

How much storage space will you need? If youre traveling for a long amount of time, you are going to need more supplies and thus more storage supplies. If you have a few kids, youre bound to need more storage space as well.

Is the trailer hitch wiring compatible with your vehicle. Its always easier to have a wiring system that is compatible. Its not a huge concern, because you can always change the wiring and its a pretty easy job, but why do it, if you dont have too? You also want to look at what kind of hitch youll need. If its a large or heavy trailer, youll need to get a fifth wheel hitch or a compatible hitch that will haul your trailer.

You also want to make sure that it isnt rusty. Some of the older RV trailers are made from metal, while most of the newer ones are made out of various plastics and fiberglass. But even the newer ones have metal on them, and rust can ensure that youre looking for a new RV trailer in a few short years. Also another very important thing is to look for water damage from a leak in the roof. Stains on the ceiling and down the walls are possible signs of water leaking roof or some other places.

You also want to make sure you actually see the used RV youre buying. Some people buy them online or from a newspaper ad, and set themselves up for some serious disappointment and lost money.

If you are planning on using your trailer RV for extended periods, you might want to take into consideration the wear and tear that you will put it through. Newer models are more likely to take the abuse than older models.

The good thing about buying a used RV trailer is that they cost much less than buying new. Plus, they can be almost as good as a new one.

So, there you have it. Those are some basic questions and things you should consider when buying a used RV trailer. It can be a tough, drawn out process, but if you do it right the first time, youll have years of enjoyment ahead of you.
